what is GoogeExactly what is Google?

Google is one of the three major search engines on the Internet, along side Yahoo! and MSN however Google is the most popular of the three. And there are plenty more being added every couple of months, the latest, run by MSN is BING and then there’s ASK.com to name a few.

Google has made a name for itself by bringing searchers long lists that are thorough and significant to their keywords or keyword phrases they choose and type in the search box on Google’s search homepage. Google is the first place people look when the want to find out the meaning of something or discover who someone is (or was) – ‘just Google it/them’ or “I Googled her/him/it” is often heard in movies and television shows because they mimic real life.

There is a science of sorts to searching on Google. By using words or phrases as specific as possible, the Google search engine will bring you back the best possible options for your search. Using quotation marks around your keywords and phrases will also help to narrow the searches, the search engine automatically takes out small words like ‘and’ ‘in’ ‘or’ ‘not’ so if they are part of your phrase, you need to put them in quotation marks along with the phrase. Use a ‘+’ in front of a word you want included for example season seven Saturday Night Live you would type in “Saturday Night Live +7” which would bring back all the websites that feature, in some way, that edition.

Google uses a PageRank technology that sends ‘crawlers’ out to websites to track keywords and keyword phrases, ranking them according to a ‘secret formula’ which many websites try to crack by using keyword rich articles on their websites – known as search engine optimization.

Google began in 1996 as a computer company called Backrub. The name Google immerged as their new name because they wanted to show the world their infinite possibilities in organizing search information. The term ‘googol’ is a mathematical word that describes the number 1 with 100 zeros behind it.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page, both PhD students in 1996 at Stanford University needed a solution to covert the measurable backlink data that is important for any given web page. They came up with the PageRank system or algorithm. It occurred to the two men that search engines using their PageRank system would produce greater results than the techniques already in place.

Google is so much more than a search engine. There is Google weather; Google stock; Google sports scores; Google time; Google unit conversion; Google currency conversion; Google calculator; Google dictionary; Google maps; Google movie times; Google housing and real estate; Google public data; Google package tracking; Google travel data/airports; Google area codes; Google patent numbers; Google synonym search and Google government.

The 403 Error message – this was created by Google in response to heavy use from companies wanting to check their websites rankings from search engine optimization. This message will appear after several (there is no data on the number but it’s probably over 10 or 20) requests for the same information from a single IP address. In June of 2009, millions of Google searchers received this message as they were searching for updates on the death of pop star Michael Jackson.

Google, whose inventors once said they would never use ads, also created Google AdSense to help people generate an income from ads placed on their websites and receive more exposure for relevant ads.
