Will Google Ever own the World Wide Web or be satisfied with Just Most of it?
One might think that Google owns the World Wide Web because they are the largest and most popular search engine on the planet; however no one owns the World Wide Web, yet.
Google has the most extensive, easy to navigate and most relevant search engine available, beating out the likes of Yahoo! and MSN several times over. People are Googling everything and anything, even themselves. An individual could set up e-mail alerts from Google so that when the subject you are interested in is updated, you will receive an e-mail or ‘Google’ alert. For example if you set up an alert for yourself – John J. Smith, every time a John J. Smith is mentioned on the Internet, you will be notified. Of course, no matter what your name is, there are many of the same names.
Not satisfied to be a search engine only and wanting to compete with the other search engines in all that they do, in 2004, Google came up with something everyone else had; e-mail accounts. Only theirs deleted that stuff no one liked to deal with – spam. In Google’s version, an individual never even had to touch it. Google invented and offered its popular Gmail e-mail accounts, by invitation only from those who already had one. The Google e-mail or Gmail presents the most space of any of the search engine’s e-mails with over 7,250 MB. This represents so much space that people can achieve their old e-mails instead of deleting them.
Many people who receive a forward from their co-worker or best friend featuring a funny YouTube video featuring a cute and cuddly cat or dog or someone doing something stupid may not realize but Google owns YouTube and have since 2006.
Although they haven’t ‘cornered the market’ but Google has entered the store – Google had Froogle for shoppers to find the best prices but somehow lost its name in 2002 so Google is now known as Google Shopping or Google Product Search. Google then conquered the blog world with software for creating and publishing your own blogs – Google Blogger.
News was a big thing to Google and they combined a single news story from several different sources so that a person could read the same story from different points of view or see how different newspapers and Internet sources covered a popular event. Although there was some question regarding content ownership, Google News is still located of the Google homepage.
What is quite possible the most popular feature on Google besides their famously fast search engine is Google Maps and Google Earth. Google Maps over took MapQuest as the number one map and directions website several years ago, however no other search engine or website could offer anything close to Google Earth. It’s a satellite view of an address, either aerial or street level, so anyone looking for your house only needs an address and they will be able to see exactly what it looks like.
Google owns a company called Picasa for those people who like to upload and publish their photos; there is Google Checkout for when shopping online and you find something you’d like to purchase, you can use Google to do it.
There are many reasons why Google is number one and not only because they have acquired almost everything on the Internet – they haven’t. Amazon, eBay, Twitter and others are still major players for various Internet connections to things people do online.
